Notes

  • Bengal. Bengals carry three tested-for conditions — progressive retinal atrophy, pyruvate kinase deficiency, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The energy level is the practical issue in old age: a Bengal that suddenly stops climbing is telling you something, and it is easy to read as the cat simply settling down.
  • The first two years do almost half the ageing. A cat reaches 15 human years by its first birthday and 24 by its second — that is the whole of childhood and adolescence compressed into 24 months. After that the pace settles to about four human years for every cat year, and it stays flat for the rest of the cat's life.
  • Weight is the one variable you control. An overweight cat is markedly more likely to develop diabetes and arthritis and to lose years off the end. The practical difficulty is that free-feeding dry food is how most cats become overweight, and the change from that habit is harder than any medical intervention that follows it.
  • Cats hide illness, and they are unusually good at it. A cat that is eating and grooming can be well into kidney disease. The signals worth acting on are quiet ones: drinking more, a change in litter-box habits, grooming less on one side, hesitating before a jump it used to make. None of those look like an emergency, and all of them are worth a visit.
  • Indoors is the largest single factor in how long a cat lives. Median lifespan for cats kept indoors runs into the mid-teens; for cats with free outdoor access it is substantially shorter, and the causes are traffic, other cats, and infectious disease rather than anything to do with breed or genetics.
  • Lifespan figures here are typical ranges from veterinary and breed-club sources, not a forecast. Individual cats of every breed live well past them — the verified record is 38 years.

A 2-year-old Bengal

24 human years, and the cat is a young adult.

Where the number comes from

The 2021 AAHA/AAFP feline life stage guidelines put the first year at fifteen human years and the second at nine more — twenty-four by the second birthday. Every year after that adds four.

That shape matters more than the number. Almost half of a cat's human-equivalent ageing happens in its first two years, and the rest arrives on a straight line.

What the life stage is for

Life stage decides what a vet looks for, not how old the cat feels. A mature adult gets annual bloodwork to establish a baseline; a senior gets it twice a year, because chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroidism and arthritis all begin quietly and all three are cheaper to manage early than late.

Breed changes the finish line, not the pace

Every cat ages at four human years per year after two. What breed changes is how many years there are — and which condition is likely to end them.
